Putting My Heart on the Page by Joe Cosentino

Putting My Heart on the Page (1)

“Thanks Joe for putting your heart on the page for us to savor!” Bike Book Reviews
“Grabs you and tugs at your emotions.” Nautical Star Books
“The characters emotions become yours. If you can only afford to buy one book this year, buy this one!” Three Books Over the Rainbow

The reviews for my An Infatuation and A Shooting Star really hit home for me, since when writing the novellas, I placed my heart (figuratively) on each page. As I wrote, I laughed out loud, felt romantic, and wept.

How did these two stories come about? After having been an actor (playing opposite stars like Nathan Lane, Rosie O’Donnell, and Bruce Willis), playwright, director, and college theatre professor, I decided to adapt my hit one-act play, An Infatuation, into a novella. The story is loosely based on my high school years and ten-year high school reunion. Harold, the leading character, is a great deal like me. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and uses his intelligence and sense of humor to mask hidden pain. I repeated the process with A Shooting Star, loosely based on my years as a theatre major in college. Again Jonathan, the leading character, is so much like me: ingenuous, romantic, and wanting to please. I was thrilled when Dreamspinner Press agreed to publish them as e-books. The glowing reviews led to my own Dreamspinner Press paperback anthology appropriately titled In My Heart.

I was ecstatic when readers and reviewers reacted so positively, stating how much reading both moved them and changed their lives. I did the happy dance on my desk when An Infatuation won Second Place Favorite LGBT Romance in Divine Magazine’s Readers’ Poll of 2015, and I won Second Place Favorite LGBT Author. When In My Heart received a Rainbow Award Honorable Mention, I kissed the computer monitor (though it didn’t kiss me back-smile).

Want to know more about these two little gems? In An Infatuation it was love at first sight for Harold while tutoring football star Mario, until homophobia and bullying drove Mario deep into the closet. Now they’re both married men. Mario, a model, is miserable with his producer wife, while Harold, a teacher, is content with his businessman husband, Stuart. When the two meet again at their ten-year high school reunion, the old flame reignites. Harold faces this seemingly impossible situation with inimitable wit, tenderness, and humor as he attempts to reconcile the past and the future. I love that the story spans twenty years, so we see Harold and Mario develop and mature in their special relationship. I also love that Harold and Mario come full circle at their high school reunion.

In A Shooting Star, new college theatre major Jonathan meets the gorgeous, muscular, tantalizing, and mysterious upper classroom and theatre department star aptly named David Star. As David grooms Jonathan for college life and for stardom, Jonathan falls deeply in love with him. This leads Jonathan on an inner and outer journey, where he learns some shocking secrets about David. As a remembrance story, the novella begins with Jonathan having just received the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Film, as he thinks back to the person who was responsible for his win. After living through his struggles with David, I love how Jonathan finds himself and ultimately a perfect life partner.

After In My Heart, Dreamspinner Press also published my Bobby and Paolo Holiday Stories: A Home for the Holidays (where young law student Bobby meets his breathtakingly captivating distant male cousin on the gorgeous and romantic Island of Capri in Italy) and The Perfect Gift (where Bobby and Paolo, back in America, marry and adopt a child). The third story, The First Noel, releases December 2018. Dreamspinner Press also published my comical and sexy gay take on my favorite fairytales like Cinderella, Pinocchio, Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldie Locks and the Three Bears, and The Snow Queen in The Naked Prince and Other Tales from Fairyland. Yet it all began in my heart with An Infatuation and A Shooting Star. Thank you for embracing these special stories, and letting me open my heart to you.
